I love life, opportunity, success and the fact that you can be, legitimately whoever you want to be – lets all just go after it. I was in the weight room with my best friend seven months ago and we were discussing our career paths and visions for the future. This is pre SCU for me. We discussed, how do we take the next step in a world filled with debt, ego and uncertainty? Simple. Dominate the PROCESS. Be the best person; work the hardest, throw results out the window because they will come if you are process oriented.
“There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.” – Derek Jeter
Being two pretty eccentric dudes who have a knack for creating some off the wall lingo, we decided to simplify ‘being the best’ and created, Monster Diesel Beast (MDB). Don’t be scared now.
The more we mention MDB, the faster it spreads. It has officially arrived here in sunny Northern California. Players, coaches, recruits, and parents constantly ask, “Beau what does MDB mean?” Or, “What does it take to be an MDB?” So in my first blog appearance I decided to clearly define what MDB means to me.
MDB is an expression that most importantly embodies the SCU Baseball program philosophy of Relentless Development (RD). An MDB is the ultimate, in whatever capacity – with your family, on the diamond, in the classroom, the board room or in life. You are tougher than anybody, mentally and physically.
You do not know how many gears you have, but you always know how to shift to the next level. You max out and then dig deep for another set. You take as many swings as you can and then you take ten more. You study for as long as possible and then read over it a few more times. MDBs find a way to exceed their limits on a daily basis.
A Monster Diesel Beast isn’t a title, but a lifestyle. You are a motivated machine and others are motivated by witnessing your approach. It comes natural and it can’t be faked. A true MDB never has regrets because they know there was nothing more they could have done differently to prepare or achieve success. Excuses? Never heard of them. An MDB knows that the true meaning of an MDB can never be perfectly defined, but rather exhibited consistently. MDB is a brotherhood; it’s not about the individual, it’s about each other. MDBs are the people who leave the room and others can’t stop talking about them. MDBs have unlimited swag, but are humble in the way they carry themselves. MDBs are gamers and MDBs are preparers. They realize it isn’t what you wait for but rather what you work for. An MDB knows that training is hard – but losing is way harder.
“Whether you think you can or think you can’t – you are right.” –Henry Ford
Now is the time in life to really go after what you want. We tell our guys all the time, if you want to make it to the big leagues, go get it. If you want to be in the Hall of Fame, why not – but what is holding us back from being great? FEAR! Don’t be scared to wake up every morning with greatness on your mind. This is life; you live it once, embrace the opportunity and be a MDB!
